My Breakfast, My Blessing

Each morning I wake up. Regardless of whether I slept well or slept poorly, no matter if my covers are scattered over the floor or in the same place as when I drifted off the night before, and whether or not I jump up at the sound of Here Comes the Sun or pretend that it doesn’t exist, I wake up with one goal in mind. Get myself some breakfast.

Without fail I joyfully eat breakfast each and every morning. I would not be alive if not for Cheerios and SKIM milk (anything other than skim just seems yucky), though I’ve been known to branch out in favor of fruit, toast, oatmeal, or eggs of the scrambled variety. Sometimes I prepare it simply in my dorm room, other times I’ll mozy on over to the diner, and occasionally I’ll have the kitchen in my home to work with.

But it truly doesn’t matter where or what I eat, just as long as I can refuel myself in the morning and give myself the energy and positivity that is often the true prize from that box of Cheerios.

And if I have to wake up an extra 10 minutes earlier to ensure that I get my morning off to a happy and healthy start and I’m not a grump-a-lump for the whole day, why that’s no trouble at all.

I love this idea! I can’t wait to greet the morning each and every day, and the snooze button only prolongs the beautiful opportunity to wake up to the sun shining. Of course, I say that now, but when I’m laying all curled up in my covers snuggling with my teddy bear, it seems to be a completely different story…



If you’ve been following along for a while, you’ll know it’s no secret that I dislike mornings. Or do mornings dislike me? Honestly, I’m not sure which way it goes – but I do have a love-hate relationship with the snooze button on my alarm. That much I can tell you.

But the Internet says it’s better to try and be a morning person (and who am I to deny the Internet). Some kind folk have put together pointers to make it easier, too!

Tea Time!

Most every day I wake up at 7:30 am, sometimes I attend class, sometimes I stare at a computer screen for hours, and some days I just relax in my room. However I start my day, I always try to do it with a nice, hot cup of tea.

I have a kitty cat mug which I’ve used since childhood, a scrabble mug with my first initial on it and a double letter score in the bottom, and a Kenneth the Page mug that my best friend got me for Christmas, exclaiming “I don’t drink hot liquids of any kind, that’s the Devil’s temperature.” Then there’s the tea itself, regular Lipton, Green Tea, and an Acai Berry whose aroma is intoxicating. Smelling these teas in my wonderfully patterned mugs gives me a happiness that is hard to describe. I know that whatever the day will bring, my tea time will remain the same and calm me as to what is ahead.

It’s something simple, having a drink. But when I drink tea I’m not on the sugar high of an energy drink or getting burdened down by the sluggishness of soda, I’m simply reminded of the history of tea which gives me a connection to the world. I remember the old Chinese remedies that incorporate tea and how it is a universal drink that breeds sophistication and class. Or at least, that’s what I like to tell myself. No matter the reality and true simplicity of the drink, I am free to explore my worldly connection, my thirst for something beyond a liquid, and my morning.
